The Montreal Chapter of the Canada Eurasia Russia Business Association (CERBA) is pleased to invite you to explore business development opportunities in the life sciences, healthcare, and telemedicine sectors of Russia.

The pharmaceutical industry is expanding in Russia and is projected to grow to 2.35 T Russian rubles by 2023. One of the factors shaping the market is the government’s push for national security in medicine supply, outlined in the document “Pharma 2030 Strategy.” The industry is dependent on import trade, valued at nearly 334 B Russian rubles in the first half of 2020 (wide range of medical equipment, including dental sector). Another driving force of the industry is the evolution of online retail of medicines, legalized during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the pharma e-commerce market in Russia reached 131 B Russian rubles.

Taking into account the current market trends, there are four main ways of doing business with Russia:

  • cooperation with the Russian distributors
  • localization of production (construction of all necessary infrastructure from scratch/ cooperation with the Russian manufacturer/transfer of technologies)
  • joining medical and pharmaceutical clusters
  • buying/acquiring an already existing business on the territory of Russia

We will specifically cover the countries’ regulation, intellectual property, and the ability to protect it; the education of and availability of an expert workforce; infrastructure and the countries’ R&D programs.
